About the Artist

I’m Sue, a New Zealand nature artist inspired by the subtle patterns and rhythms of the natural world, from coastlines and skies to land, plants, and birds. Working in acrylics, I create representational paintings that explore a sense of place, belonging, and quiet connection. My work is available as original paintings, limited edition prints, and commissioned pieces, each created with care and intention.

I’m drawn to nature’s quieter moments: clouds reflecting in water, windswept trees clinging to cliffs, and the quiet strength of native plants. Through my work, I explore how we connect with our environment, and how emotion, memory, and belonging become woven into the landscape over time.

After an injury several years ago, I chose to dedicate more time to painting. Balancing this passion alongside my full-time work as an office manager, I now create original artworks, open and limited edition prints, and collections developed for exhibitions. Each piece I make is an invitation to pause, reflect, and find a sense of hope and inspiration in the beauty of the natural world.

Whether you’re here to view new works, learn more about my process, or explore pieces from past exhibitions, I’m so glad you’ve found your way here.

Ngā mihi,
Sue Lockett

Artist Statement

I am a New Zealand artist drawn to the coast as a place of belonging.
The sea, sky, and land hold memory, mood, and movement, and my work explores how these elements shape the way a place feels, not just how it looks.

I paint moments of quiet connection. Shifting clouds, changing light, coastal trees, and native birds appear as fragments of lived experience, inviting a pause and a breath. These are places many of us know, or feel we know, even if we cannot name them.

Nature’s patterns are central to my practice. The rhythm of waves, the repetition of branches, and the openness of the sky reflect resilience, calm, and continuity. Through colour and atmosphere, I aim to capture a sense of home, whether remembered, imagined, or deeply felt.

My work is an invitation to slow down and reconnect with the natural world.
I hope each painting offers a feeling of stillness, familiarity, and quiet hope.
