Ever Thought About Commissioning Your Own Painting?

Beachfront houses with large windows, surrounded by lush trees, reflected in calm water. Grey sky and sandy shore set a serene mood.

Ever thought about how to commission a painting? A commissioned artwork is more than a finished piece on the wall. It’s a collaborative journey, where your ideas, memories, and sense of place come together in an original painting created just for you.

I’ve recently completed a commission that reminded me just how meaningful this process can be. From our first conversation through to the final brushstrokes, it was a shared experience. Seeing how happy the collector was at the end made it all the more rewarding.

If you’ve ever wondered what commissioning a painting involves, here’s a look behind the scenes.

The Commission Process Starts With a Conversation

Every commission begins with a chat. You might come with a clear vision, or simply a feeling you’d like the painting to capture. It could be a place you love, colours you’re drawn to, or a sense of calm, movement, or connection.

We talk through your ideas together, and I help shape them into something that will translate beautifully onto canvas. This stage is relaxed and collaborative, with space to explore what feels right.

Planning the Artwork

Once we’ve settled on the concept, I confirm the practical details: size, timeframe, and pricing. This gives you clarity before the painting begins and ensures we’re both aligned.

To secure your commission, a 50% deposit is required. This allows me to schedule your painting and begin the creative work with care and intention.

Watching the Painting Come to Life - The Commissioned Painting in Progress

One of the things collectors often enjoy most is being part of the journey. As the painting develops, I share progress updates along the way. These may include photos and short videos of small sections as they evolve.

These glimpses into the process allow you to see the artwork taking shape and help ensure the painting is unfolding in a way that feels true to what you imagined.

The Final Reveal

When the painting is complete, I share the finished artwork with you. At this stage, small refinements can be made if needed. Once you’re happy, the remaining balance is paid, and the painting is signed, varnished, and prepared for delivery or collection.

The result is a one-of-a-kind artwork created especially for you. A piece that holds meaning, memory, and presence in your space.

Is a Commission Right for You?

A commissioned painting can be a beautiful way to celebrate a place you love, mark a moment in time, or bring something truly personal into your home. It can also make a thoughtful and lasting gift.

To ensure each artwork receives the time and attention it deserves, I take on a limited number of commissions at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Commissioning a Painting

How do I commission a painting?

Commissioning a painting begins with a conversation. You can get in touch via my contact page to share your ideas, whether that’s a specific subject, a place you love, or simply a mood or colour palette. From there, we’ll discuss size, timeframe, and pricing before the painting begins.

What type of paintings can I commission?

I create commissioned paintings inspired by nature, place, and memory, particularly coastal landscapes, skies, sea, and natural elements. If you’re unsure whether your idea is a good fit, I’m always happy to talk it through.

How long does a commissioned painting take?

Timeframes vary depending on the size and complexity of the artwork, as well as my current commission schedule. I’ll give you a clear estimate before we begin so you know what to expect.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes. A 50% deposit is required to secure your commission and confirm your place in my schedule. The remaining balance is paid once the painting is complete, prior to delivery or collection.

Will I see the painting while it’s being created?

Yes. Throughout the process, I share progress updates, including photos and occasional short videos of sections of the painting as it develops. This allows you to see your commissioned painting come to life and ensures we stay aligned.

Can I request changes?

Small refinements can be made before the completion stage to ensure the finished artwork feels right. Because each painting is created specifically for you, major changes are discussed carefully during the planning stage.

Do you ship commissioned paintings?

Yes. I can arrange delivery within New Zealand, and shipping options will be discussed once the painting is complete.

If you have a question that isn’t answered here, feel free to get in touch. I’m always happy to chat about ideas and possibilities.
