The Power of Art

Writer: Sue LockettSue Lockett

Art is more than just an image—it’s an experience. A painting can transport us, stir emotions, and awaken memories. Through colour, light, and texture, an artwork can capture the essence of a place, making it feel familiar, even if we've never been there before.

As I prepare for my upcoming exhibition, Coastal Tapestry, I’ve been reflecting on how my paintings are shaped by my connection to the coast—its shifting skies, the rhythm of the sea, and the quiet moments that stay with us long after we’ve left.

Art and Emotion

We all have places that make us feel something special. It could be the peace of an empty beach at dawn, the energy of crashing waves, or the nostalgia of golden light on the horizon. Through my art, I aim to capture these fleeting moments, so they can be felt again and again.

Colour plays a big role in setting the mood—soft blues and greys create calm, while warm golds and deep greens evoke a sense of belonging. Brushstrokes and composition also influence how a painting “feels.”

A Personal Connection to Place

Every viewer brings their own memories and emotions to an artwork. A scene might remind someone of a childhood holiday, a place they long to visit, or a quiet escape they cherish. This personal connection is what makes art so powerful—it becomes part of our story.

With Coastal Tapestry, I want to share my own love for the east coast and invite others to find their own connection within my paintings. Whether it’s the soft reflection of the sky in the water or the intricate patterns of sand and tide, these moments form a visual tapestry of place and memory.

Join Me for the "Coastal Tapestry" Exhibition

I’d love for you to experience Coastal Tapestry in person. The exhibition runs this May at Estuary Arts in Orewa, showcasing my latest works that explore the ever-changing beauty of the coast. Whether you’re drawn to the colours, the movement, or the emotions they evoke, I hope these paintings will resonate with you.

Stay tuned for more details, and feel free to share your own favourite coastal memories in the comments.
