Art is more than just an image—it’s an experience. A painting can transport us, stir emotions, and awaken memories. Through color, light, and texture, an artwork can capture the essence of a place. It makes that place feel familiar, even if we've never been there before.
As I prepare for my upcoming exhibition, Coastal Tapestry, I’ve been reflecting on how my paintings are shaped by my connection to the coast. Its shifting skies, the rhythm of the sea, and the quiet moments stay with us long after we’ve left.

The Connection Between Art and Emotion
We all have places that make us feel something special. It could be the peace of an empty beach at dawn or the energy of crashing waves. Perhaps it’s the nostalgia of golden light on the horizon. Through my art, I aim to capture these fleeting moments so they can be felt again and again.
Color plays a big role in setting the mood. Soft blues and greys create calm, while warm golds and deep greens evoke a sense of belonging. Brushstrokes and composition influence how a painting “feels.” Each element works together to create a layered experience for the viewer.
A Personal Connection to Place
Every viewer brings their own memories and emotions to an artwork. A scene might remind someone of a childhood holiday, a place they long to visit, or an escape they cherish. This personal connection is what makes art so powerful. It becomes part of our story and reflects our experiences.
With Coastal Tapestry, I want to share my love for the east coast. I invite others to find their own connection within my paintings. Whether it’s the soft reflection of the sky in the water or the intricate patterns of sand and tide, these moments form a visual tapestry of place and memory.
The Role of Colour in Art
Color is more than an aesthetic choice; it speaks to the viewer's emotions. Each hue can influence our mood and perceptions. For example, blues often evoke tranquility and peace, while bright yellows can inspire joy and energy.
In my recent works, I’ve used a palette inspired by the coast. The shades of the sea and sky blend seamlessly, creating a harmonious effect. This invites viewers to immerse themselves in the artwork and experience the essence of the coast.
Experience the "Coastal Tapestry" Exhibition
I’d love for you to experience Coastal Tapestry in person. The exhibition runs this May at Estuary Arts in Orewa. It showcases my latest works that explore the ever-changing beauty of the coast.
Whether you’re drawn to the colors, the movement, or the emotions they evoke, I hope these paintings will resonate with you. The essence of the coast is captured in these works, and I can’t wait to share them with you.
Stay tuned for more details about the exhibition. Additionally, feel free to share your own favorite coastal memories in the comments. Let's celebrate the beauty of places that inspire us!
